About L'Arche
L'Arche L’Arche means ‘The Ark’ in French and refers to the biblical ark in the book of Genesis. Like the ark of Noah, L'Arche offers a place of safety and refuge. But most importantly L'Arche offers acceptance. Each person is accepted as inherently valuable as an individual human being and is not judged by abilities, accomplishments, appearance, possessions or social status. Although based on Christian principles, L'Arche welcomes people of all faiths and none. Men and women with intellectual disabilities are at our heart. They are people with a wide range of abilities, independence and needs, from varied backgrounds and of different ages.

L'Arche Dublin In 1993, L'Arche Dublin began in a rented cottage in Portmarnock, a small village on the east coast of Ireland, just north of Dublin. On St. Bridges Day, 1994, the first core members were welcomed. A permanent home for the community became possible when the Christian Brothers organization donated some land in Baldoyle. Money was raised and in 1996 a new wheelchair accessible home-Seolta, Irish for sails-was built. It is home to five core members and the assistants who share the home with them. In 1999 a second home-Leoithne, Irish for Gentle Breeze-was purchased. It is home for three core members and the assistants who share the home with them.

L'Arche Dublin currently consists of these two homes with plans to add others in the future. They are ordinary houses located in a residential neighbourhood and are indistinguishable from the neighbourhood homes around them. However, as some of our members are wheelchair users the houses have been modified to be fully wheelchair accessible. Our identity and mission statements set the basis for our community.
